IIT Guwahati Strengthens Ties with Japan Through New Academic and Industry Initiatives

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has deepened its long-standing partnership with Japan during a recent visit to Gifu University.

Led by Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal, the IITG delegation signed five MoUs with Gifu University President Prof. Kazuhiro Yoshida and other leaders, opening doors to new initiatives in professional education, joint postgraduate programmes, and immersive exposure to Japan’s advanced manufacturing and research ecosystem.

Professional Education in Smart Manufacturing

One of the key outcomes was the introduction of a jointly designed microcredentials course in Smart Manufacturing. The short-term programme is intended for working professionals from government and private enterprises.

Faculty from IIT Guwahati and Gifu University will jointly develop the syllabus and deliver the course in Japan and at IIT Guwahati. The format responds to growing demand for modular, industry-relevant upskilling, particularly in advanced manufacturing environments.

Joint Postgraduate Programmes: Computational Biology and Food Security

The visit also confirmed support from Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for two additional joint MTech programmes in Computational Biology and Food Security.

IIT Guwahati and Gifu University already offer multiple joint degree programmes at the MTech and PhD levels. These programmes require shared curricula, aligned academic standards, and joint supervision. They are designed to create graduates who can operate comfortably across academic and professional settings in both countries. They also provide structured exposure to research and industry ecosystems.

These programmes are enabled by long-standing faculty collaboration and sustained institutional support.

Engagement with Japan’s Manufacturing Ecosystem

Alongside academic initiatives, the visit highlighted the importance of industry engagement. The IIT Guwahati delegation visited IBIDEN, a global manufacturer specialising in advanced electronic materials and semiconductor packaging for high-performance computing and AI hardware.

In addition, the delegation participated in the Joint Degree Programme Symposium hosted by Gifu University. The symposium brought together representatives from universities as well as members of industry from across Japan.

These interactions strengthened the academic and professional networks that underpin joint programmes and industry-linked education.

India’s Act East Framework

These developments take place within the broader context of India’s Act East Policy, which recognises education and academic cooperation as long-horizon instruments for capacity building, technology access, and people-to-people ties with East and Southeast Asia.

Japan is a key partner within this framework. Academic collaboration complements cooperation in infrastructure, digital technologies, and supply chains.

Sustaining Long-Term Academic Collaboration

Through sustained partnerships such as the one with Gifu University, IIT Guwahati continues to strengthen its role as a site of active research, international exposure, and globally connected education. The collaboration reflects an approach built over time, enabling ambitious initiatives in professional training, postgraduate education, and engagement with strategically important technology ecosystems.
